Ethics in Writing

Assignment: You are reporting about the following person.  In a short paragraph, write an excerpt of the story as if you were writing it for a newspaper and choose to include or exclude whatever details you feel necessary. Then, explain why you chose to include or exclude those details underneath the written report. How could this decision relate to ethics in writing, communicating, reporting, etc?

Name: Lorena Bilbury

Age: 20

Education: Private High School, Now junior at Univeristy of Santa Barbara

Ethnicity: Latina

Occupation: Library Assistant at her school

Hobbies: golf, water polo, poetry

Criminal history: none

Parents: Mother, Lauren Bilbury and Father, Henry Bilbury

Personality Summary: Lorena was involved in many activities at her school and was a great team player.  Her water polo team described her as selfless and always doing everything for the better of the team.  She was a focused girl who valued family and friends.

Incident Report: Early Sunday morning on September 16, 2012 Lorena was accused of breaking into her school's student files and stealing pertinent information of another student.  According to Lorena's Professor Augland, "She hasn't been herself lately.  Not ever since team member April Seray took her place on the water polo team." A student said to have seen Lorena leaving the school's office unusually early with a manilla envelope in her hand. At this time a student file is currently untraceable without  confirmation it was stolen, but Lorena is being questioned by police and possibly facing theft charges from the University.

  1. A student at University of Santa Barbara is facing theft charges for stealing student information from University files. Junior Lorena Bilbury, 20, was seen leaving the school office with a manila folder in her hand “unusually early” Sunday morning. Bilbury is a library assistant at the University as well as an involved student athlete. One of her teachers, Professor Augland, commented that Lorena “hasn’t been herself lately.” Bilbury has no criminal record. The police are currently questioning her while they await confirmation that the file was actually stolen.

I tried to include only the information that seemed necessary to the story, such as her age and nonexistent criminal record. I didn't include any information that I thought would frame the report one way or another. The fact that her teammates described her as a team player or that someone took her place on the water polo team turns this into a human interest story rather than a theft report. It seems unethical to plant the idea that Lorena was upset about some girl taking her place on the team and that lead her to act deviantly. I also thought including her parent's names or the fact that she went to private school was unnecessary to the report. I do however think it is extremely important to include the fact that the student file hasn't been confirmed stolen.

  2. On the morning of September 16th, there were thefts pertaining to student files and pertinent information of another student. Lorena Bilbury, age 20, is currently a junior at University of Santa Barbara and is being accused of the crime. Bilbury was a rather involved student; from working as a library assistant to being a member of golf, water polo, and poetry. Her teammates described her as "selfless" and "always doing everything for the better of the team". Some even said, "she was a focused girl who valued family and friends. On the contrary, one of Bilbury's professors stated, "She hasn't been herself lately. Not ever since team member April Seray took her place on the water polo team". As of today, the file is untraceable but Lorena is being questioned by police and possibly facing theft charges from the university.

My intentions were to include details that would add substance to the story. I didn't want to include too much or make it too wordy because readers tend to stray away from wordy pieces of reading. Not having any readers would completely go against the reason of the writing a report. Also, it is important to include both sides of a story: not just the good opinions from people and not just the bad. I feel like whatever I write should present two sides of a story so that the reader is left to make their own opinion about the story. I don't want to feel like I'm telling someone what to believe.

  3. On the morning of September 16, University of Santa Barabara junior, Lorena Bilbury, was accused of stealing personal information on another student after breaking into the school’s student files. Another student claims to have seen the 20 year old, “leaving the school’s office unusally early with a manila envelope in her hand.” Although usually described as a focused, family valued water polo teammate that would put others before herself, others have noticed a recent change in Bilbury.
“She hasn’t been herself lately. Not ever since team member April Seray took her place on the water polo team,” said Bilbury’s Professor Augland. There is no evidence that Bilbury stole the information, or that it was stolen in the first place, but she is being questioned by the police and could possibly be seeing theft charges from the university in her future. Bilbury has no criminal record.

I chose to include the main details of the story, especially at early on in the “mini article.” I felt that the minor details included those of her ethnicity, occupation, past education, and some of her hobbies; they were simply not all necessary in order to get the main point across, which was concerned about her being accused of theft. For this type of story, the details of the witness and the accused crime was the most important to include. The decision that reporters have to make about what information to use adds into the argument of ethics, as using certain information, especially information that is not necessary for clarification, can lean readers to one side or another. As a reporter, it is essential to write through an objective tone and with the information that is pertinent to the understanding of the story.

  4. A junior at the University of Santa Barbara may be facing charges in the wake of the theft of highly sensitive student information. Lorena Bilbury, 20, was sighted on the morning of September 16th walking out of the school's main office with a manila envelope. Hours later, the personal information of one student, who shall remain anonymous, was reported as missing. Bilbury, who has no prior criminal record, is described by her water polo teammates as "selfless", and "a focused girl who loved family and friends". However, her professor, Dr. Augland, opined that "She hasn't been herself...Not ever since teammate April Seray took her place on the water polo team." As of today, Bilbury is being questioned by police. and may be facing pending theft charges from the University.

I chose to include information that I deemed most important to the story. I kept some of her personal background out of the story and instead focused on her social life at the University. Her personal life seems essential unimportant as it provides no explanation as to why she may or may not have stolen the file. However, her positive social life at the university and her grief over being cut may have both had a factor to play in her situation, so i tried to keep those two ideas at the forefront of my article. As reporters, it's easy to push the fact that she was a fine young woman and use this aspect to make a sensationalist story. However, it is still not officially known whether she actually committed the crime. Therefore, it is important to present reasons why and why not she would have stolen that information and let the viewers decide.

  5. Files go missing all the time. It’s happened to everyone and will continue to happen. Which is why the circumstances surrounding the accusation that Lorena Bilbury, 20, stole a student file from the school is nothing more than speculation at this point. A student said that they had seen Bilbury seen leaving the school’s office unusually early with a manila envelope in her hand, which has lead to inquiries from the police but without an arrest thus far. Coincidentally there is one student file currently missing. Bilbury has been involved in many activities at her school and was described as selfless by her teammates. If any further evidence came forward to support the claims that she had stolen the documents then she would already be facing disciplinary action.

I chose to include certain details about the arrest based on allowing for evidence to speak louder than speculation. I want the audience to be questioning themselves as to whether she did or didn’t do it. I thought it was critical to include the information about an eye-witness because it is a circumstance that the reader has to know otherwise the accusation seems reckless without some basis for it. I also included a bit about her because the audience needs to know more than she was accused. Including the information about her activities and comments based on what teammates have said makes the reader question and consider. The argument being made that she was seen with the envelope and that there is one missing. However by reading about the accused the reader would say, “But would a person who is so involved really steal a student file?” The purpose is to debate and come to a conclusion on one’s own.

  6. Lorena Bilbury, teacher's pet or petty thief? At the age of twenty, Lorena Bilbury was thought to be a model student. Bilbury was noted as being a selfless person, always supporting her friends and family. She has a good academic record, was a valued player on her school's golf and water polo teams as well as an assistant for her school's library. But what happens when a good girl goes bad? Something snapped inside of that poor Latina early Sunday morning on September 16. Bilbury savagely broke and entered into a records office inside of her school, purloining the records of another student. Was it academic jealousy that made her violate the privacy of another student? Or was it spite because she had lost her position on her water polo team to young April Seray? People close to Lorena stated that "She hasn't been herself lately." However that is no reason to commit petty theft! Lorena is now being questioned by the authorities and may be subjected to charges from her dear university. She may be able to hide the missing files, but she will not be able to hide her guilt.

Hi everyone. I chose to include the details I did so I would evoke emotion in the readers. Even if it may be emotion of pity for my single-minded biased approach. At least they would read it and bring profits to the company I am writing for. Some (such as Nancy Grace followers) even get hooked to approaches like mine. It might not be the best option to give readers a chance to formulate their own opinions on the story but it would be the best to generate profits for my company and that is sadly the main goal of media companies.

  7. Lorena Bilbury has never had any issues with school. At age 20, she remains very involved and true to her school and activities. Though as of recent events, it seems like this may not be the case...On the morning of 16 September, 2012 Bilbury was accused of stealing a student file from her school. Eyes turned to Bilbury as she is the library assistant for the University and would have more access to the student files than a regular student would. Another factor that led officials to believe that Bilbury is the culprit would be that she had been recently replaced on the water polo team. Could these upset feelings have finally peaked and this is the result of the anger? Bilbury will be facing theft charges from the University.

I chose to include the details that I did because the story didn't need to be told in too much depth. There was no need for quotes from her parents because we don't know anything about them and they weren't involved. We didn't need to know about the other sports that she was involved in because the only activity that was mentioned as a cause of this issue was her replacement on the water polo team. Some might've chosen to include the fact that she is of Latina descent, though I didn't feel that it was pertinent to this issue. I chose to include her age, place of schooling and the sport that she is in because I feel like those are a "must-know" in order to be informed about the situation and the consequences that have come of it.
These decisions could relate to ethics in writing, communicating and reporting because I feel that the news tells lots of stories like this, but also tends to add in information that will sway the reader's viewpoints and opinions on the issues. I feel that if there was just the raw information given, things would be able to be seen clearer and prejudices wouldn't be formed as quickly. News agencies do do a good job with reporting on stories; however, I just feel that sometimes too much information is given that doesn't really pertain to the situation.

  9. Lorena Bilbury, age 20 and current junior at the Univeristy of Santa Barbara, faces accusations of breaking into her school's student files and stealing a fellow student's pertinent information. According to a student, Bilbury left the school's office unusually early with a manilla envelope in her hand. Bilbury is a library assistant at her school and to this point has had no criminal record. The accusation is being investigated and there is no concrete evidence to prove that she did indeed steal the files.

I chose to tell the story the way I did because to this point there is no real story. I mean, one could make a bunch of accusations and randomly throw around people's guesses but that's not the point. The story is developing and currently there is nothing to say besides that files were stolen and there is a suspect. I don't understand why the parents, her past sports, her ethnicity, her obnoxious professor's opinion are important to the story. The story is about a student, Lorena, and files. I think it's sickening that in news stories some of the other information would be mentioned- especially race. I hate that people frame others, for the better or worse, based upon their race, especially when it comes to crimes. I would hope that the reporter in charge would have the tact to make sure that people wouldn't have a solid opinion after reading the story because there is virtually nothing to really base a strong opinion on in this story.

  10. Lorena Bilbury, a 20 year old junior and the University of Santa Barbara, is facing theft charges for the missing files of a fellow student. Lorena was seen leaving "unusually early" from the school's office with a manilla envelope in her hand. Prior to this incident Lorena has no criminal record and was on good terms with her school. She was a library assistant and played on the water polo team. Currently there is no conformation that the file was stolen and Lorena will e questioned by the police.

I tried to be as least biased as possible when telling this story. I included facts that could paint her as guilty as well as those could show her as not guilty. With the information we are given there really is no concrete story, just accusations. To make this a hard hitting story I believe one would have to evoke emotions and probably be a bit biased on how they presented the information.

  11. On september 16, Lorena Bilbury. may be facing theft charges after being accused of stealing another students file. Bilbury, a 20 year old junior at The University of Santa Barbra, has been described as a caring, thoughtful and hard working person until lately, when her professor started to notice a change in her attitude.
"She hasn't been herself lately. Not ever since team member April Seray took her place on the water polo team," Professor Augland said.
She was also spotted leaving the school 'unusually' early that morning carrying a manilla envelope. There is no evidence that Bilbury actually stole the information, or that the information was even stolen in the first place but she is being questioned by the police and could be facing theft charges from the University of Santa Barbara.

I tried to tell the most important things, so that people reading would have the facts only and be able to base their decision on their own thoughts and ideas. I chose to only tell the information because i didn't want to be biased on whether i thought she was guilty or not. I believe this is the right way to write news stories and to make sure that we're only telling the facts and letting the readers get what they want out of the story and form their own opinions.

  12. Lorena Bilbury, a 20-year old junior at the University of Santa Barbara, is facing charges of theft after a fellow student's personal files went missing. According to another student, Bilbury was seen "leaving the school's office unusually early with a manilla envelope in her hand". Described by her water polo teammates as "selfless and always doing everything for the better of the team", Bilbury faces these accusations as she is a library assistant with the university, allowing her more access to important documents than other students. At this time, University officials are still trying to locate the missing file, which has not been confirmed missing, but police are still questioning Bilbury.

I tried to be as true to the story as I could be without veering into unaccredited details or blatantly untrue statements. I tried to show who Lorena was, but not paint her to be an angel or devil, which is hard considering the many great things about her and the actions of which she is accused. I chose to leave out her private high school education, golf and poetry hobbies, parents, and ethnicity because they really don't connect to the story at hand. There is nothing to do with golf or poetry, anybody can go to college, no matter what high school you go to, I have no information at all about her parents other than names, and her ethnicity has no connection to the scenario at all. My main goal was to cut down on unimportant details and cut straight to the heart of the story.

  13. University of Santa Barbara’s Lorena Bilbury, junior, has been accused of theft pertaining to the school’s private files and records. A student claimed to have seen Bilbury leaving the school’s office with manila envelope in hand at the time of the crime. No motive has been named, but Bilbury’s position as a Library Assistant at the university has lead the police to question her. Though student files are currently untraceable and there has been no confirmation anything was stolen, if accusations are true, theft charges will be filed and Bilbury will be placed under police care.

I left out all opinions in my article because it was a new article. In news articles/reports, there should be no opinion to show. I gave all the information about the crime rather than the girl. Her involvement in school clubs and her parents' names aren't important to the facts. Along with that, her ethnicity shouldn't play a role in the story and doesn't matter when deciding if she is guilty or innocent.

  14. Lorena Bilbury, a 20-year old female student attending the University of Santa Barbara-California, is facing theft charges from the university for allegedly stealing the student files of another student. According to Professor Augland, one of Lorena's teachers, has been quoted as saying that Lorena "hasn't been herself lately." Another unknown student of the university said that Lorena was leaving the school's academic office at an unusual time early Sunday morning, carrying a manila envelope. Up to this point, police have not confirmed if a student file was indeed stolen. However, local police continue to sort out and investigate certain details, as well as question Bilbury herself about the situation. Lorena Bilbury has no criminal history.

I left out all the details of her profile that I thought were irrelevant to my version of the story. My main focus was to inform the newspaper audience of the main issue at hand, not about Lorena's ethnicity, occupation, parents, or hobbies. I wanted to write my story straight-forward, and I considered multiple sources in order to make my article well-rounded. In other words, I did not want my story to sound highly opinionated or biased. I feel that the readers of my newspaper article should receive the full background of this important issue, not my speculative assumptions of what occurred.

  15. During the early morning hours of Sunday September 16, Lorena Bilbury, a 20 year old junior at the University of Santa Barbara-California, was accused of breaking into her school's student files and stealing pertinent information of another student. Although the suspect has no prior record, an unknown student claimed to see Lorena leaving the academic office with a manilla envelope in her hand. One of Lorena's professor also noted that Lorena "hasn't been herself lately." Police continue to search for answers and if Lorena is found guilty, she could receive theft charges from the University.

I decided to make my introduction sentence the most detailed as it introduced Lorena and her character. Some of the details provided were not necessary towards the development of the story so I tried to leave those out. By including and excluding the information I did, I hope I avoided sounding biased as I only tried to report on the cold-hard facts.

  17. University of Santa Barbara junior Lorena Bilbury was accused of breaking into her school’s student files and stealing pertinent information of another student, an incident report stated. So far there has been no confirmation that a student file has been stolen and Lorena is currently being questioned by police. Bilbury faces possible theft charges filed by the University.

Much of the information provided, while it may be true, is simply not attributed. A lot of the personality summary describes vaguely how this student may have acted around others and what people thought of the 20-year-old girl. In a story like this, it is important not to editorialize. It is important to not unfairly paint a picture of Barbara or put any sort of thought in the reader’s minds other than exactly what happened. That is why I chose to leave out a lot of the details involving her personality. I also tried to include only attributed information.

  18. A file containing pertinent information about a student at the University of Santa Barbara was reportedly stolen from the school in the early hours of September 16. Lorena Bilbury, a junior at the University of Santa Barbara, is currently the only suspect in the case. According to the police report, a fellow student claims to have seen Bilbury leaving the school's offices early Sunday morning with an envelope in her hand. Bilbury is currently being questioned by the police and may face theft charges.

I chose to only include factual information. I put who she was, where she went to school, and what she was accused of. I chose not to put information that is irrelevant, like her background.
